Dr. J. W. “Joe” Joseph, R.P.A.

Dr. J. W. “Joe” Joseph, R.P.A. is the Director of Administration for New South Associates and a principal in the firm since its incorporation in 1988. He received his M.A. in American Civilization and Ph.D. in Historical Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania and has 37 years professional experience in the eastern U.S. and Caribbean as well as in France, Egypt, and the Republic of Panama. A specialist in African American archaeology, he has directed the excavation and analysis of African American landscapes and artifacts from both urban and rural settings, including cemeteries. He also specializes in historic contexts and has directed the preparation of contexts on historic agriculture, historical archaeology, and historic mining in Georgia. He has 27 professional publications in edited books and journals and is the Editor of the Society for Historical Archaeology’s journal Historical Archaeology.

Dr. Joseph serves as New South Associates’ Program Manager for the Augusta VCP Lab.
